Virginia-War-Museum
History of Weapons

Virginia-War-Museum is located in Huntington Park on Warwick Blvd., Newport News, Virginia. The museum offers many exhibits on American military history from 1775 to the present unfolds and highlighted through weapons, uniforms, and much more.

Over the past 75 years, the Museum has collected over 65,000 artifacts. You will get impressed with the shear number of weapons, particularly tanks and mobile artillery both in and outside the museum.

This is a great museum to learn American history for the first time or get a repeat course in it.

Virginia war museum

The museum was established in 1923 by American Legion Post # 25(The Braxton/Perkins Post) as the American Legion Memorial Museum of Virginia. The City of Newport News assumed administration of the museum in the 1950's.


Virginia War Museum Exhibits

America and War: The gallery highlights U.S. military history from 1775 to present day, many artifacts are on display for you to admire, take a look at World War II U.S. anti-tank cannon and much more.

Axis Powers: This popular gallery outlines the political, economic and social factors that led Germany, Italy and Japan to declare war on the United States in 1941.

Evolution of Weaponry: This exhibit highlights the development of firearms and displays individual pieces such as an 1883 Gatting gun, an American Stuart Light Tank from World War II, and many other interesting artifacts.

Women at War: The gallery displays photographs, posters, and uniforms follow the roles women played as nurses, Red Cross workers, YMCA representatives as well as members of the military with emphasis on the 20th century.

Berlin Wall Exhibit: The new exhibit will center around a section of the Berlin Wall already in the museum's collection. During the Wall's existence there were approximately 5,000 successful escapes to the West, while at least 136 people died trying to cross it to freedom.
