456-acres recreational facility

Sandy-Bottom-Nature-Park, Virginia - This 456-acre recreational facility features two lakes, wetlands areas, trails for hiking and biking, fishing, non-motorized boating, camping, tent cabins and a beautiful nature center.

In addition to exhibits, there are paths cycling and hiking, a fishing pier, bicycle, paddle boat, boat and canoe rentals, sheltered picnic area by reservation, primitive camping sites, tents cabins, gardens and a gift shop.


Sandy Bottom Nature Park


Out of 456 acres, almost all of which remains in its natural state. Habitats include forest, wooded and marshy wetlands, open water, and lake edge. Because the habitat has been left in relatively unmodified state, breeding and migratory birds are abundant, as are many species of reptiles, amphibians and mammals.

What To See

Gardens: The " real-life" display of how you can enhance your onw backyard into a space that will attract and shelter wildlife is a must-see for anyone who loves the outdoors.

Park Wildlife: The park is the proud home of over 400 species of plants in over 100 families. Sandy Bottom is also home to wide variety of animal life.

Wildlife Center: A number of wild animals that would not be able to survive in the wild reside permanently here at the park.

What To Do

Boat Rental: You can rent a boat for fishing or just paddling. Last boat rental is an hour before the Nature Center closes. Fishing licenses can be obtained from any Wal-Mart, K-Mart or Bass Pro Store. The can also be purchased online .

Camping: Nine individual camping sites are generally available on first-come/first serve basis we suggest you to call ahead to make the reservations. The sites can accomodate two 4-person tents, also there is no electricity, running water, or adjacent parking, however fire pits, barbecue grills and picnic tables are have been used to improve the sites.
For slightly more civilized camping, the park offers tent cabins permanently installed on wooden platforms overlooking Crystal Lake.

Fishing: Fishing is allowed only on Sandy Bottom Lake, and only from the pier or from one of the rental boats. Largemouth Bass are currently cacth-and-release for those measuring 14" or larger.

Walking Trails: The park offers numerous walking and hiking trails.
