Atlantic Coast Kite Festival is held every year on May 1-2 ( Staurday-Sunday) at two locations, one at 17th Street Park in Virginia Beach and second at Portsmouth City Park. Kite fliers and spectators of all ages will experience a visual feast at this popular event features variety of activities. "Flights of Fantasy" is the theme that participants will explore in this spectacular festival's "Best Kite Contest".
To participate in his fun contest, participants must build a kite and bring it to the festival. Kites should be constructed out of materials that were not a part of the existing kite.
The contest consists or two parts: the actual kite itself and how well it is made, and participant's ability to fly the kite - participants must be able to fly their kites consecutively in the air for 5 minutes at a height of 100 feet.
New contest for 2010: Rokkaku Kite Battle. Rokkaku kites are six-sided kites originally used as Japanese fighting kites. In Rokkaku battles, opponents try to “bring down” their opponents’ kites by crossing lines and pulling them out of the sky.
The Rokkaku Battle is free to enter, and takes place at 4:00pm each day. Players must furnish their own Rokkaku kites.

Kite-Festival in Virginia Beach - Saturday, May 1st - 10:00am-5:00pm on the beach at 17th Street and in the 17th Street Park.
Entry to the kite-festival is free.
Kite-Festival in Portsmouth – Sunday, May 2nd - 10:00am-5:00pm at the City Park in Portsmouth (140 City Park Avenue).
