Jockeys Ridge State Park
Jockeys Ridge is the tallest natural sand dune system in the Eastern United States. Located in Nags Head, it is one of the most significant landmarks on the Outer Banks, North Carolina.
The sand on the dunes is incredibly hot during the summer months. On average, the sand will be 25 to 30 degrees hotter than the air temperature, so when it's 95 degrees, the sand will be 125 degrees. Remember this if you feel like going barefoot.
Weather on the Outer Banks is a bit unpredictable. Lightning storms occur quite often during the summer months, especially in the afternoon. If you're on the dunes and you hear the warning siren, it is indicating a lightning storm is approaching and you need to clear the ridge as soon as possible.
A 360-foot boardwalk is located near the parking lot. It is perfect for people who prefer a shorter trip or would rather stay off the sand. Interpretive displays along the route offer information about the plants and animals in the area. A deck with a bench is at the end with a great view of the dunes. Read reviews and see what other travelers have to say
Some of the other fun activities are; self-guided hiking trails, hand gliding, sand boarding. Water activites include windsurfing, swimming and kayaking.
