Back-Bay-Wildlife-Refuge

Back-Bay-Wildlife-Refuge. The refuge contains more than 8,500 acres, situated around Back Bay, in the southeastern corner of the City of Virginia Beach.

Due to its unique geographic location, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge provides overlapping ranges for both southern and northern species.

Habitats include barrier island beach and dunes, shrub-scrub, woodlands, farm land and fresh and brackish marsh.

More than 350 species of birds have been observed at the Refuge. During the winter and fall months, flocks of waterfowl migrates to the Refuge. The Snow and Canada goose, Tundra swan, and many duck species are abundant.

Back Bay Wildlife Refuge Songbirds migrates to the Refuge every spring and fall. Habitats are also used by a wide assortment of other wildlife, including such threatened and endangered species as the Loggerhead sea turtle, Piping plover, Peregrine falcon, and Bald eagle.

Activites at the Refuge

Foot Trails: Two boardwalks lead to the beach.

Fishing: Surf and freshwater fishing are permitted in specific areas. A Virginia fishing license is required for freshwater and saltwater fishing.

Boating: Boats and canoes that can be hand-carried to the Bay are allowed. No trailers are allowed at visitor parking area.

Hunting: Available by permit during designated periods.

Canoe/Kayak Launch Area Horn Point: Back Bay Refuge offer this 1 acre site to launch canoes and kayaks with a through way for vehicles and their trailers. Easy access in and out of the site. Parking is on a first come first serve basis and accessible parking is available. Restrooms are located on the site. Please note: Jet Ski's and other moterized watercrafts are prohibited.

Tram Tour: Blue Goose Express - departs at 9 a.m. and takes roughly one hour to reach False Cape State Park. On this tram ride you will see the exotic birds and blue herons and more.

The Visitor Contact Station hours are 8:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. weekdays, 9:00 AM - 4:00 P.M. weekends. The Visitor Contact Station is closed Saturdays, December through March; closed holidays with the exception of Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day.
